Today Is for Her: Celebrating the Girl Child

Happy International Day of the Girl Child! Today we celebrate the sparkle, strength and story of every girl from the campus scholar in Anambra to the girl selling snacks by the roadside in Ondo. Since 11 October was adopted by the United Nations as a day to focus on girls’ rights and unique challenges, we pause, reflect and cheer for HER.

Every girl deserves a life where her dreams aren’t limited by what society expects, where her voice carries weight and where she can walk freely without fear. Whether you’re 7 or 70, you once carried a vision inside you — to learn, to lead, to love, to be free. Today is a reminder: that vision still counts.

Think back to when you were young. Maybe you stood in front of the class, arms trembling, reciting your poem and a teacher’s nod lit up your confidence. Or that day your parents gifted you a notebook just to say, “May you write your own story.” Those moments mattered.

To the girls of today — juggling school, chores, pressures, social media and expectations know this: you are powerful beyond measure.

You can be scientist, president, artist, engineer, healer, inventor. When they say “you’re too young” show them wisdom is not about age.

When someone says your future is someone’s “choice” remind them it belongs to you.

When doors close, build another one.

When you feel small, open your eyes — you’re already growing.

To parents, guardians, teachers, brothers, sisters and community leaders — today also calls you. Protect her dreams. Listen when she speaks. And when she falls, don’t say “I told you so” — say “rise again.” Be the reason she believes in strength.

Let’s not just post hashtags today. Let’s make promises we keep. Let’s commit to closing the school gap, ending child marriage, fighting gender violence, and building spaces where every girl thrives.

Because when a girl is empowered, she lifts her family, her community, her nation. Let’s celebrate her. Let’s invest in her. Let’s walk with her.
