DSS Alerts Nigerian Army of Alleged ISWAP Plot to Attack Ondo and Kogi Communities

The Department of State Services (DSS) has raised an alarm to the Nigerian Army over an alleged plan by members of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) to carry out coordinated assaults on communities in Ondo and Kogi States.

In a confidential communication addressed to the Commander of the 32 Artillery Brigade in Akure and obtained by newsmen, the DSS warned of “imminent attacks” by ISWAP operatives and advised the deployment of heightened surveillance and security reinforcements across vulnerable areas.

The letter, signed by H. I. Kana on behalf of the State Director of Security and titled “Imminent Attacks in Ondo State by Members of ISWAP,” detailed that targeted locations in Ondo include Eriti-Akoko and Oyin-Akoko in Akoko North-West Local Government Area, as well as Owo town, the administrative center of Owo Local Government Area.

According to the intelligence report, members of the terror group have already begun reconnaissance on soft targets in the mentioned areas, indicating a strong likelihood of coordinated strikes. The DSS urged the army to take swift preventive measures and called for the cooperation of local communities to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious movements or gatherings.

The security alert emphasized that proactive action by the military and relevant agencies was essential to avert the planned attacks and ensure public safety.

Confirming the development, the Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Olayinka Ayanlade, told newsmen that security agencies were already acting on the intelligence received.

“That’s partly why we were in Akoko on Sunday. Everyone is taking steps to ensure no event takes us unaware,” Ayanlade stated.

The DSS warning comes a little over three years after ISWAP-linked terrorists launched a deadly assault on St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo on June 5, 2022, resulting in the death of 41 worshippers and injuries to several others. The suspects arrested in connection with that attack are currently facing trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Security operatives have since been placed on high alert in Ondo and Kogi, as authorities work to prevent any potential breach of peace.
