SanitationSaturday: The Great Clean-Up Chronicles!

SanitationSaturday: The Great Clean-Up Chronicles!

It’s the last Saturday of the month — that sacred Nigerian day when the streets go quiet, shops stay shut till 10 a.m. and everyone suddenly remembers that mop stick in the corner. Yes, it’s General Sanitation Day!

There’s something deeply nostalgic about it. The day starts early, with someone blasting Ayefele or Tope Alabi from a Bluetooth speaker while fetching water. You can almost smell the morning dew mixing with detergent as neighbors sweep compounds, shake out rugs and scrub verandas. Children dart around pretending to help while secretly waiting for when they can play football after the cleanup.

But beyond the sweat and suds, there’s a beauty to it, a kind of community rhythm. Everyone is in sync. One neighbor brings out the waste bin, another clears the gutter and someone’s mom shouts instructions from the balcony like a general commanding her troops.

Then comes the decluttering phase. This is when you finally face the truth that broken chair you swore you’d fix last year has to go. That pile of clothes “you might still wear someday”? Nope, donate them. The clutter we hold onto often mirrors the mental load we carry. As you toss out what no longer serves you, you’ll feel lighter, not just physically but mentally too.

Cleaning isn’t just about hygiene; it’s a reset. It’s where you remind yourself that peace doesn’t always come from big changes but from small acts like a fresh bedsheet, a neatly folded wardrobe or a sparkling floor that smells like Dettol victory.

And after all the sweeping, scrubbing, rinsing and rearranging, take a moment to breathe. Sit by the window, feel the breeze and admire your hard work. Let that cool drink or bowl of garri taste extra sweet because you’ve earned it.

So today, don’t see it as just another chore. See it as a fresh start, a little life detox. A clean home is a clean slate and who knows? Maybe cleaning your space is the first step to cleaning your thoughts too.
