Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin Slams Donald Trump Over “Disgraced Country” Remark

Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, has strongly criticised former US President Donald Trump for describing Nigeria as “a disgraced country,” calling the statement offensive, undiplomatic and contrary to global diplomatic standards.

Trump had reportedly made the comment during a White House press briefing, where he threatened to “take decisive action” if the alleged killings of Christians in Nigeria continued.

Reacting in a viral video that gained traction on Friday, Jibrin condemned the remarks, describing them as an insult to Nigeria’s sovereignty and a violation of diplomatic conduct.

“For the president of the United States to say, ‘Oh, you are doing this, we will attack you, and Nigeria is a disgraced country,’ is totally unacceptable,” Jibrin said. “He should understand the implications of his words, withdraw the statement, and tender an apology to Nigeria.”

The Deputy Senate President maintained that Trump’s outburst contradicted the very values the United States claims to defend, stressing that no world leader has the authority to issue military threats without following due process.

“It goes against international law. If you have concerns about Nigeria, take the proper diplomatic route — approach the United Nations, seek a resolution, and follow the right procedures. Anything outside that is wrong and un-American,” he added.

Addressing a cheering audience, Jibrin emphasized that Nigeria would not be intimidated by Trump’s rhetoric. “We are not afraid to speak the truth. If Trump were here, I would tell him directly that he is wrong and that his approach disrespects international norms,” he stated.

He urged the United States to prioritize dialogue and mutual respect, emphasizing that diplomacy, not threats, should guide relations between nations.
