The dispute erupted following a closed-door meeting of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) in Abuja, chaired by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma.

The APC governors issued a communique declaring they would not endorse, support, or participate in any cross-party alliance or “Rainbow Coalition” ahead of the 2027 general elections. Uzodimma emphasized that the party’s campaign machinery would exclusively support official APC candidates across all levels—from governorship down to state assembly seats. The governors expressed concern that parallel arrangements championed by non-APC figures like Wike could create divided loyalties, confuse voters, and undermine APC candidates running for non-presidential seats.
