Tensions Rise as PDP Convention Faces Threats from Wike

Wike, once a key ally of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, has openly opposed the event, citing disputes over unresolved zoning issues and alleged impunity within the party. He warned that the convention could plunge the PDP into another round of crisis if grievances in the South-South and South-East leadership structures are not addressed.

In a Tuesday interview on Channels TV, Wike insisted that the Calabar congress that produced Dan Orbih as South-South Vice Chairman must stand, while demanding the removal of Ali Odefa as South-East Vice Chairman, citing a court order. “If they don’t correct it, there will be another crisis” he threatened.

His stance has drawn strong reactions from PDP leaders. National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba dismissed Wike’s claims, insisting the NEC duly approved the Ibadan convention and that INEC has been formally notified. He warned that disciplinary measures could be taken against any member working against the party’s collective interest.

Deputy National Youth Leader Timothy Osadolor and former South-West Vice Chairman Eddy Olafeso both accused Wike of attempting to destabilize the party, stressing that no individual can obstruct its rebuilding process. They reminded him that Supreme Court rulings had declared internal party matters non-justiciable.

Other PDP stalwarts, including Chief Bode George, described Wike’s threats as “mere noise” affirming that NEC decisions outweigh personal grievances. Meanwhile, former governors Samuel Ortom and Okezie Ikpeazu, alongside National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, known allies of Wike were seen in Abuja amid speculation of a counter-strategy.

Despite the tensions, PDP leaders maintain that the Ibadan convention will go ahead with 19 new members expected to be elected into the National Working Committee. Oyo PDP Chairman Dayo Ogungbenro downplayed Wike’s threats, calling them political banter that party leaders would eventually resolve.

With weeks to the convention, all eyes are on the PDP’s ability to reconcile its warring factions and avoid yet another damaging internal crisis”.
