Chelsea Thrash West Ham 5-1 as Pressure Mounts on Graham Potter

Chelsea produced a stunning comeback on Friday night, dismantling West Ham 5-1 at the London Stadium and leaving their former manager, Graham Potter, under mounting pressure just two games into the new Premier League season.

Potter, who has managed just five wins in 21 matches since taking charge in January, has endured a nightmare start to the campaign. Last week’s 3-0 defeat to newly-promoted Sunderland was followed by another humbling as his side crumbled after an early advantage.

Things went from bad to worse for new West Ham goalkeeper Mads Hermansen, a £20 million signing from Leicester, who endured a nightmare debut. He spilled a corner that allowed Moisés Caicedo to poke home, and then failed to deal with another delivery as Trevoh Chalobah pounced to complete the rout.

Chelsea’s emphatic victory propelled them to the top of the Premier League for the first time since December 2021. The Blues had suffered a setback before kick-off when Cole Palmer was withdrawn during the warm-up with a muscle problem, but his absence paved the way for Estevão to shine on his full debut.

By the time thousands of home fans streamed out with more than half an hour left, the damage was already done. Those who stayed vented their anger at the final whistle, booing a West Ham side that looked lifeless despite Paquetá’s early brilliance.

For Potter, who was dismissed by Chelsea in 2023 after just seven months in charge, the pressure is now intense. With his side rooted at the bottom after two heavy defeats, he faces a battle to convince West Ham’s hierarchy that he can turn their season around.
