THROWBACK THURSDAY: End-of-Year Party Prep — The Real Childhood December Dettying

Before Detty December became concerts and flyers on Instagram, our own Detty December lived in school halls, church auditoriums, community fields and dusty classrooms and the preparation alone was a whole season on its own. End-of-year party prep was not just an event; it was a full cultural experience.

First came the rehearsals, the kind that started with: “Everybody line up! Sopranos to the left, altos to the right!” and before you knew it, we were singing “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” in harmonies that only made sense to our music teacher. Dance rehearsals were even more iconic, that legwork we thought was choreography but was really just jumping and twisting in unison.

Then there was the selection process, the tense moment where every child silently prayed not to be put in the “drama group” because it meant memorizing lines like a full actor. Some wanted choir, some begged for choreography, some just hoped to avoid cultural dance because those beads and wrappers could scratch. And if you were chosen as Mary or Joseph for the Christmas play? You automatically became a celebrity till January.

Savings? Let’s talk about it. Our parents literally started keeping money aside from October, because they knew the requests were coming, party wear, matching shoes, wristwatch, hairdo, socks and that small handkerchief we believed completed the look. Some mothers even dropped the famous line: “Better pass your exams first before talking about Christmas cloth.”

The final week before the big school event always felt electric. Teachers were shouting last instructions, children were sneaking off to rehearse dance steps and mums were doing last-minute ironing and outfit adjustments. Choir groups were polishing their notes, drama teams were running lines over and over and cultural dancers were shaking their beads to make sure nothing would fall off. Every corner of the house and school felt like preparation headquarters, props in one corner, shoes being polished in another, mirrors filled with kids practicing their brightest smiles.

Those days carried a special kind of joy because the preparation alone was excitement. No loud pressure, no complicated planning, just simple childhood anticipation. The thrill of trying on outfits, rehearsing until it felt perfect, and imagining how everything would come together made the whole experience unforgettable. It was pure, sincere and filled with the warm happiness of getting ready for something you believed in.

Those were the days when celebration was simple, pure, heartfelt. No heavy planning, no loud pressure just community, childhood excitement and the joy of a year winding down beautifully.

Today’s Throwback Thursday takes us back to when our biggest worry was if our shoe would match our belt and our biggest achievement was hitting that dance step on beat.

Those memories? They are golden, timeless and ours to relive.
