Nigerian Soldiers Express Concerns Over Use of Rehabilitated Ex-Insurgents in Operations

Troops involved in counterinsurgency operations in Nigeria’s North-East have reportedly expressed reservations about working alongside former Boko Haram members who have undergone government-backed rehabilitation and reintegration programmes.

According to reports, some of the rehabilitated ex-insurgents have been attached to local security groups that support military operations in parts of Borno State. The development is said to be part of ongoing efforts to reintegrate former fighters into society.

However, some military personnel have raised concerns about the arrangement, citing fears over trust, operational security, and the possibility of intelligence leaks. They argue that previous security challenges have made many troops cautious about collaborating closely with individuals who were once part of insurgent groups.

The concerns highlight the broader debate surrounding Nigeria’s deradicalisation and reintegration initiatives, particularly the balance between rehabilitation efforts and maintaining confidence among security personnel on the frontlines.

While authorities continue to promote reintegration as a pathway to lasting peace, the reported concerns from troops underscore the complexities involved in rebuilding trust after years of conflict in the region.
