Civil Society Issues Final Verdict on Ekiti Governorship Election, Cites Low Turnout Despite Peaceful Polls

EKITI, NIGERIA — The Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room has released its final comprehensive assessment of the June 20, 2026, Ekiti State Governorship Election, praising the overall peaceful atmosphere while raising alarms over deep-seated voter apathy.

Data validated by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) revealed that out of over 1.02 million registered voters who collected their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), only 384,940 accredited voters participated—meaning nearly two-thirds of eligible citizens stayed away from the polls.

While the Situation Room commended security agencies and INEC for the early commencement of voting in 92% of observed polling units, the coalition’s final report highlighted scattered incidents of voter inducement and irregular procedures. Ahead of upcoming off-cycle elections in states like Osun, civil society groups are urging the National Assembly and political parties to aggressively reform voter engagement strategies to restore dwindling public trust in the democratic process.
