Custody Deaths Trigger Protests in Niger State

The Incident & Arrests

 The Crackdown: On September 15 and 16, 2026, the Mining Marshals of the NSCDC conducted joint raid operations across residential mining zones in the M.I. Wushishi and Lukoto areas near Minna to curb illicit gold mining.  

 The Custody Deaths: Dozens of arrested suspects were detained at the NSCDC Command facility in Minna. In the early hours of Thursday, September 17, 33 to 37 detainees were discovered dead in their cell, with several others in critical condition rushed to the Intensive Care Unit at Minna General Hospital.  

Conflicting Explanations on Cause of Death

 NSCDC Position: The Niger State NSCDC Commandant, Suberu Siyaka Aniviye, initially claimed the deaths resulted from a sudden “suspected disease outbreak” within the detention facility.  

 Intelligence & Preliminary Reports: Intelligence reports and insider accounts suggested that the fatalities were caused by extreme overcrowding, poor ventilation, suffocation, or exposure to hazardous chemical residues carried on the miners’ bodies from mining pits prior to arrest.  

 Federal Clarification: The NSCDC National Headquarters stated that no official cause of death has been confirmed pending complete forensic and post-mortem examinations at Minna General Hospital.  

Protests & Public Unrest in Minna

 Street Demonstrations: Outraged family members, fellow miners, and youth groups flooded the streets of Minna. Major thoroughfares—including Maitumbi, Tudun Natsira, Berger, and Tunga—were barricaded with burning tyres and heavy stones.  

 Disruptions & Security Response: Commuter movement and local businesses were disrupted as protesters demanded justice, transparency, and the immediate release of the deceased bodies to their families. Vehicles and property were damaged during the commotion before heavy security deployments restored calm.  

State & Federal Government Actions

 Suspension of NSCDC Commandant: Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo ordered the immediate suspension of Niger State NSCDC Commandant Suberu Siyaka Aniviye pending the outcome of a full investigation.  

 High-Powered Investigation: NSCDC Commandant General Ahmed Abubakar Audi dispatched a federal investigative team led by the Deputy Commandant General (Intelligence & Investigation) to Minna to investigate detention conditions, medical care provided, and protocol compliance. The Police Command also opened a parallel criminal inquiry.  

 Governor Declares Mourning: Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago declared three days of state mourning, suspended political campaign rallies, and set up a state committee of inquiry to support affected families.
