Aiyedatiwa Approves Creation of Ondo State Senior Secondary Education Board to Boost School Infrastructure

Governor of Ondo State, Honourable Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has approved the establishment of the Ondo State Senior Secondary School Education Board (OSSEC), a major step toward improving infrastructure and management across the state’s secondary schools.

The creation of OSSEC aligns with the Federal Government’s directive under the gazetted National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC) Act, which mandates states to provide a five percent counterpart fund to support infrastructural development in secondary schools nationwide.

Announcing the development in his office, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Professor Igbekele Ajibefun, said the establishment of OSSEC demonstrates Governor Aiyedatiwa’s commitment to advancing education in Ondo State through strategic investment in infrastructure and effective management systems.

“With this approval, Governor Aiyedatiwa’s administration has fully aligned with the Federal Government’s resolve to upgrade infrastructure in our secondary schools” Professor Ajibefun stated.

Explaining the scope and benefits of the new board, Administrative Secretary of the Ministry and member of the establishment committee, Dr. Akindele Ige, said OSSEC would enhance funding for school administration and infrastructural projects across the state. He added that the improved facilities are expected to attract more students and raise enrollment in senior secondary schools.

Dr. Ige clarified that the responsibilities of OSSEC are distinct from those of the Universal Basic Education Board (UBEC). While UBEC will continue to oversee infrastructure and management from primary education to Junior Secondary School Three (JSS3), OSSEC will specifically focus on Senior Secondary Schools (SSS1 to SSS3).

Once fully operational, OSSEC will function as an agency under the State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. It will coordinate its programmes to complement existing educational bodies without overlapping responsibilities, ensuring seamless administration and sustainable development in Ondo State’s education sector.
