Tiwa Savage Explains Why She Rejects “Queen of Afrobeats” Title

The singer shares her thoughts on the “Queen of Afrobeats” title and why she doesn’t feel comfortable with it, despite fans’ admiration.

Tiwa Savage has opened up about why she prefers not to be called the “Queen of Afrobeats,” a title many fans have given her over the years.

During a recent chat with Ebro on Apple Music, Tiwa explained that while she appreciates the love, she finds the title uncomfortable because she believes many other female artists also deserve recognition.

“Yeah, they call me the Queen of Afrobeats, but there are a lot of us that are Queens,” she said.

“Personally, I don’t like that tag, it’s uncomfortable because I feel like if I start accepting it, I need to be humble and secondly, it doesn’t make sense to me. So, I don’t [accept it]. But I appreciate it. It didn’t come up with it. I think it’s just because I was one of the first female artists in Nigeria to breakthrough. I do appreciate that. I’m not taking it for granted.”
