TUESDAY VIBES | FROM “LONDON TAILOR” TO “FASHION DESIGNER” – HOW THE TIMES HAVE CHANGED!

TUESDAY VIBES | FROM “LONDON TAILOR” TO “FASHION DESIGNER” – HOW THE TIMES HAVE CHANGED!

Once upon a time in the 90s, the “London Tailors” reigned supreme. They didn’t need a fancy shop or AC, just their trusted black sewing machine, a wooden table, chalk behind their ear and confidence that could move mountains.

You’d show up clutching your folded Ankara, maybe even a photo of Genevieve Nnaji or Ramsey Nouah from an old Complete Fashion magazine. You’d say, “I want it like this!” They’d nod seriously, measure your waist twice and assure you: “No wahala, e go fine.”

Fast forward to collection day and… well, let’s just say sometimes it has you in stitches or in tears and find your self trying to explain what could’ve been with shaky voice and plenty english “Its just not nice” But will they accept fault ? Never! They’d simply say, “Its the same style now, if you have eaten, the fittings will come out well” or says they want to amend and after amendments it got messier and somehow, your day or evening is ruined by your “LONDON TAILOR”

Still, there was a certain joy in those times. The rhythmic sound of the machine paddling, the whirr of the iron, the smell of hot starch filling the air, different ovation smiling at you and you standing in front of a cracked mirror, admiring your “London design.” It wasn’t about perfection; it was about pride. Our parents would wear their aso-ebi like royalty and tailors were community heroes. They didn’t just sew clothes, they sewed confidence.

Now? Oh, we’ve evolved! Fashion has gone digital. Walk into a designer’s studio today and it’s a whole production — ring lights, Pinterest boards, mood fabrics and talk of “aesthetic” “draping” and “ready-to-wear.” Your designer no longer uses chalk; they sketch on tablets. They don’t promise you “next week” they say, “Please, your order will be ready in 10 working days.” And of course, they post your finished outfit on Instagram before you even wear it.

But let’s be honest — something about those old “London Tailor” days still hits different. The small talk while waiting under the mango tree, the excitement of trying on your new outfit and the way your mum’s face would light up when her gele matched perfectly with her iro and buba. It was pure joy, no filters, no hashtags, just vibes and culture.

From the pedal machine to pattern sketches, from “come next week” to “custom orders,” one thing remains true, style has always been part of our story.

Happy Tuesday from OECS
