UNIMED Debunks Fears Over Teaching Hospital Transfer to FUTA

In a statement made available to newsmen on Sunday, the institution clarified that UNIMED remains an independent university and that the arrangement will not adversely affect its operations or mandate.

According to the statement, the ceding of the Akure branch of the Teaching Hospital to FUTA is a strategic move aimed at kick-starting FUTA’s medical science programmes while UNIMED prepares its main teaching hospital in Ondo for full-scale operations.

The university emphasized that as a rapidly growing medical school, it already has facilities at the Ondo Teaching Hospital capable of meeting the academic and clinical needs of its students.

UNIMED further explained that collaboration is vital for modern universities to thrive, stressing that the move should be seen as a cooperative gesture rather than a weakening of its structure.

“The ceding of a branch of the Teaching Hospital is not an attempt to decimate UNIMED,” the statement noted. “Governor Orimisan Aiyedatiwa remains committed to the growth of UNIMED, and his support has been evident through leadership and financial backing.”

The institution also assured the public of its sustainability under the leadership of its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ebunoluwa Adejuyigbe, a renowned Professor of Paediatrics and Child Health. It pledged to continue delivering quality medical and health sciences education in partnership with local and international institutions.

Reiterating its commitment, the management stressed that UNIMED has come to stay as the pride of Ondo State and will continue excelling in teaching, research and community service.
