Akpabio Urges Civil Society to Uphold Democracy, National Development

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has called on civil society organizations (CSOs) to remain unwavering in their role as guardians of democratic values and key drivers of national development.

Speaking at the maiden Civil Society Summit on Civil Democracy and National Development in Abuja, themed “Civil Society, Democracy and Governance Reforms: Building Sustainable Partnerships for National Development,” Akpabio represented by Senate Committee on Media Chair, Sen. Yemi Adaramodu commended CSOs for their steadfast commitment to justice, rule of law, and institutional integrity.

“Democracy is not merely the counting of votes; it is the conservation of virtue,” he noted, urging CSOs to continue standing for truth, even in challenging times. “Development without democracy is tyranny, and democracy without development is a whisper in the wind,” he added.

Human rights advocate, Sen. Shehu Sani, urged CSOs to engage constructively with government rather than act as opposition. “Know the facts, understand the policies, and engage with strategy,” he advised, emphasizing the need for research-based, policy-driven advocacy.

Former Youth and Sports Minister, Sunday Dare, encouraged civil society to act as translators of government policy to citizens, bridging the gap between state actions and public understanding. “Your role is not agitation, but meaningful engagement that builds trust,” he said.

Legal practitioner Kenneth Okonkwo emphasized unity and strategic collaboration as the backbone of civil society’s effectiveness. “If divided, your purpose weakens. To achieve true reform, civil society must move from passive observation to active partnership,” he said.

The summit provided a platform for dialogue on democratic accountability, inclusive governance, and the evolving role of civic organisations in shaping Nigeria’s future.
