Tinubu Urges Youths to Use Digital Media for National Unity and Growth

President Bola Tinubu has urged Nigerian youths to embrace digital media as a tool for fostering unity, driving innovation, and accelerating national development.

The President encouraged young Nigerians to move beyond using social media for self-expression or venting frustrations. “I challenge you to use your platforms not just for anger or retaliation but for problem-solving and mentoring others as we build together” he said.

Emphasising the importance of responsible digital engagement, Tinubu cautioned against the spread of misinformation. “We live in a world where disinformation spreads rapidly. Verify before you amplify” he urged. “Let our digital spaces reflect values such as honesty, compassion, discipline and patriotism”.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to expanding internet access through investment in digital infrastructure, while also strengthening cyber security. “Every Nigerian has a right to be protected in both the physical and digital realms” he added. “As our digital ecosystem grows, so must our collective responsibility to ensure trust, safety and accountability”.

Tinubu also commended the ingenuity of young Nigerians who have used digital tools to amplify their voices and create innovative solutions.

In his remarks, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, condemned the rising misuse of digital platforms for disinformation, particularly ahead of the 2027 elections. “Digital media are no longer just spaces for memes and dance videos, they are now decisive battlegrounds for public opinion and elections” he noted.

Mr. Dada Olusegun, Special Assistant to the President on Social Media and convener of the summit, echoed the call for responsible digital engagement. “In just over a decade, social media has evolved into a powerful force for communication, influence, and innovation. It’s now central to governance, commerce, and idea exchange” he said.

According to NAN, the event was attended by top government officials, youth groups, media strategists, tech experts, NGOs, and civil society organizations.
