NOA Marks World Suicide Prevention Day, Calls for End to Stigma

World Suicide Prevention Day, observed globally on September 10 every year, highlights the urgent need to tackle mental health issues, promote hope, and reduce the stigma associated with suicide.

Tijjani noted that the NOA joined the rest of the world to raise awareness, break the silence, and remind Nigerians that suicide is preventable. He explained that more than 720,000 lives are lost annually to suicide worldwide, with devastating effects on families and communities.

The NOA director urged Nigerians to listen with patience and without judgment, while encouraging those struggling with mental health challenges to seek professional help from doctors, counsellors or hotlines. He also emphasized the importance of sharing information about available support systems.

“Use words that heal. Your kindness and care can bring hope. World Suicide Prevention Day is not only about remembrance but about hope. Let us stand together against stigma and show that every life matters” Tijjani added.
