Senate Blocks Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Return, Cites Pending Appeal

Abuja, Tuesday September 9, 2025 – The Senate has rejected Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s bid to resume legislative duties, insisting that her six-month suspension remains in effect until the Court of Appeal rules on her case.

In a letter signed by the Acting Clerk to the National Assembly, Dr Yahaya Danzaria, the Senate confirmed receipt of the senator’s notice indicating her intention to resume on September 4, which she claimed marked the end of her suspension.

However, the Senate clarified that her suspension began on March 6, 2025, and stressed that the matter is sub judice since it is already before the Court of Appeal.

“The matter remains sub judice and until the judicial process is concluded no administrative action can be taken to facilitate your resumption” the letter stated.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, was suspended in March after being accused of breaching Senate standing orders. While the Federal High Court in Abuja upheld the suspension, she has since challenged the decision at the Court of Appeal.

According to the Senate’s position, her return to the chamber will only be considered after the appellate court delivers its judgment.
