NLC Calls for Justice and Fair Treatment as Nigeria Marks World Decent Work Day

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged the government and employers to prioritise justice, fairness and improved welfare for workers as the nation joins the rest of the world to commemorate World Decent Work Day.

In a statement on Tuesday, NLC President Joe Ajaero said the annual observance serves as a reminder of the urgent need to eliminate exploitation and impunity in workplaces across the country. He stressed that decent work remains a fundamental condition for sustainable national progress.

Ajaero stated that “the rights and welfare of workers must not be compromised” adding that every effort must be made to end unfair labour practices and ensure dignity at work. He emphasised that both public and private sector employers must uphold the four pillars of decent work — job creation, social protection, rights at work and social dialogue — as set out by the International Labour Organisation (ILO).

The labour leader criticised some government agencies and private organisations for undermining these principles, warning that such behaviour stifles industrialisation and weakens economic diversification. “No nation can achieve true development while repressing workers’ rights and promoting inequality” Ajaero added.
