Barau Urges Kano Governor to Stop Politicising Security, Insists Claims Against Him Are False

Tensions rose in Kano after the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I Jibrin, cautioned Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to stop politicising security concerns and instead prioritise resolving the challenges affecting the state. Barau issued the warning in response to accusations from the Kano State Government following its 34th Executive Council Meeting, where officials claimed that one of his remarks could weaken security operations.

Barau dismissed the allegation as completely unfounded. Through a statement released by his media aide, Ismail Mudashir, he described the claims as reckless and malicious, insisting the government must provide proof.

According to him, the Kano State Government is attempting to damage his rising public profile by spreading falsehoods. He stressed that at no point did he make any statement capable of undermining security efforts. He challenged officials to present any clip or evidence to back their allegations.

Barau emphasised that insecurity, including bandit attacks in parts of Kano, demands unity and cooperation, not political distractions. He noted that he has consistently worked with security agencies and stakeholders to support interventions that can improve safety across the state and the country.

The deputy senate president, who also serves as the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, urged Governor Yusuf to focus on effective governance. He lamented that Kano once closely followed Lagos in terms of prosperity, but misgovernance had eroded that progress. He maintained that the state can reclaim its past glory if decisive, responsible leadership is applied.

Barau also highlighted several initiatives he has championed to boost security. These include donating vehicles to police formations, supplying motorcycles to officers in Kano North, rehabilitating sections of the state police headquarters and building police stations in multiple communities. He has also supported the DSS in Kano.

The statement further noted that Barau facilitated the establishment of key training institutions such as the NSCDC training college in Gwarzo, the Nigeria Police Service Commission institute in Kabo and the Nigeria Immigration Service training school in Bichi. Additionally, he installed solar streetlights in various areas to enhance night patrols by security agents.

The statement concluded by affirming that Barau has made significant, tangible contributions to improving security in Kano and advised the state government to emulate his efforts rather than engage in character attacks.
