Tinubu Reassures Nigerians, Engages U.S. Diplomatically After Trump’s Threat Over Alleged Killings of Christians

President Bola Tinubu said his administration is actively engaging the international community following remarks by Donald Trump who threatened military action against terror groups in Nigeria over alleged mass killings of Christians. The president made the statement at the Federal Executive Council meeting on Thursday where he urged Nigerians to remain hopeful and pledged that his government will root out terrorism and restore security across the nation.

“We assure all of you that we will defeat terrorism in this country,” Tinubu declared during the session held at the Council Chamber of the State House, Abuja — his first since July. He noted that Nigeria remains on a growth path and that global and domestic confidence in the economy is rising as reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda begin to show results.

Addressing the U.S. relationship, Tinubu added: “The most important thing is that despite the political headwinds and the fear of our people, we will continue to engage with partners. The success of the $2.3bn eurobond that was oversubscribed by 400 % is the most assuring. We are engaging the world diplomatically, and we assure all of you that we will defeat terrorism in this country.” He reaffirmed his resolve to move forward with unity and purpose.

His remarks come a few days after Trump threatened to cut U.S. aid to Nigeria and ordered the Pentagon to “prepare for possible action” over the alleged targeted killing of Christians, a claim the Nigerian government strongly rejects. The government insists the country is confronting terrorism, not faith-based persecution.

Idris explained that Nigeria has opened formal diplomacy with the U.S. to address the allegations and stressed that terrorism in Nigeria affects all citizens regardless of religion or ethnicity. He also reiterated the government’s readiness to work with international partners while maintaining sovereignty and adherence to the rule of law.
