2027 Race: Labour Party Warns Peter Obi Over ADC Alliance, Says Ticket Not Reserved

Speaking on Trust TV on Wednesday, Farouk made it clear that the LP’s presidential ticket will not be automatically handed to Obi or anyone else, stressing that it is open for competition. He specifically mentioned Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, Obi’s 2023 running mate, as a qualified contender who would be given the opportunity to contest under the party’s banner.

“Datti is just as qualified as Peter Obi to run for president. The candidacy isn’t reserved, it will be an open and competitive process,” Farouk stated. “If Datti declares his intention, buys the form, mobilizes support, and earns the ticket, the party will back him.”

He expressed displeasure over Obi’s ongoing interactions with leaders of the ADC and warned that such actions could result in disqualification. “You can’t keep one leg in Labour Party and another in another party. If you don’t come back fully, you risk losing the chance to contest,” he said.

This statement follows Baba-Ahmed’s recent declaration that he might throw his hat into the ring for the 2027 race but only if Obi decides not to contest. While affirming his loyalty, Baba-Ahmed also emphasized that he is not desperate for power and believes Obi deserves another shot at the presidency under the LP platform.

The development signals possible tensions and power shifts within the Labour Party ahead of the 2027 general elections, as internal factions begin to position themselves for influence and control of the party’s ticket.
