Peter Obi’s Alleged PDP Return Stirs Political Storm

Peter Obi’s Alleged PDP Return Stirs Political Storm

Concerns are mounting that Obi’s potential defection to the PDP could fracture the fragile unity within the ADC-led coalition, which has been gaining traction ahead of the 2027 general elections. The speculation gained momentum after former Borno State Governor, Ali Modu Sheriff, claimed on Channels TV’s Politics Today that Obi was actively weighing a comeback to the PDP to contest its presidential ticket.

“Peter Obi wants to be President. Atiku has been Vice President, and for him, it’s President or nothing,” Sheriff said.

Obi, who was Atiku Abubakar’s running mate in the 2019 presidential election under the PDP, defected in 2022 to pursue the presidency under the LP.

Adding to the intrigue, PDP founding member and elder statesman Prof. Jerry Gana confirmed that the party had begun reaching out to Obi and other former members. While no formal negotiations have commenced, Gana revealed that initial conversations with close associates of Obi were underway. “He was our member. Why not? If I were Atiku, I would’ve backed him in 2023,” Gana stated.

The PDP’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, echoed this sentiment, describing Obi as “a very valuable asset” and expressing strong interest in bringing him back.

However, the ADC has responded with clear warnings. Bolaji Abdullahi, spokesperson for the ADC, stated on Arise TV that Obi “cannot risk going back to the PDP,” stressing his current alignment with the ADC-led coalition.

Amid the swirl of narratives, Obi himself has debunked any claim suggesting he had either denied PDP overtures or pledged allegiance to ADC. In a statement signed by Ibrahim Umar of Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR), Obi maintained he remains focused on the coalition talks and cautioned against fake statements being attributed to him. “Obi has made no public statement about returning to PDP or committing to ADC,” the statement clarified.

Efforts to get clarification from Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, were unsuccessful as he failed to respond to calls and messages.

Meanwhile, analysts believe Obi’s elusive positioning is unsettling both his allies and opponents. Dr. Nduka Odo, a public affairs analyst, argued that the speculations have less to do with fact and more to do with political strategy and media manipulation.

“Ali Modu Sheriff’s comments raise more questions than answers. Is he privy to Obi’s plans? Or is he leveraging Obi’s name for political capital?” Odo asked. “The reality is, name-dropping Peter Obi generates headlines.”

Odo added that while Obi has signaled his intention to contest in 2027, he has yet to make a definitive statement on the platform. “Is it LP, ADC, or will he yield to PDP’s appeals?” he mused.

Odo warned that returning to the PDP would be a mistake. “The party is in shambles and dominated by figures like Wike who seem to be pulling the strings in favor of the ruling APC. Obi would risk becoming a pawn in that power play,” he cautioned.

He concluded with a word to Nigerians: “Rather than focus on political drama, we must assess these candidates objectively based on character, competence, and track record. That’s the only way to lift millions out of poverty and build a Nigeria where no one goes to bed hungry.”
