PDP Rejects Alignment Calls Amid Heightened Friction over One-Party Dominance and INEC Electoral Reforms

ABUJA — The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is currently grappling with deep internal friction, marked by a firm rejection of recent calls from various political factions advocating for an alignment with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Party leadership has cautioned against any moves that could threaten Nigeria’s multiparty democracy, warning strongly against the dangers of sliding into a one-party state.

The debate over internal party alignment and dominance has sparked intense discussions among key stakeholders, civil society organizations, and political analysts. Critics of the ruling party argue that a weakened opposition undermines democratic accountability, while internal PDP factions remain divided on strategy ahead of the upcoming electoral cycles.

Simultaneously, pressure is mounting on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Civil society groups and opposition leaders have urged the electoral body to provide clear regulatory directives and transparency regarding the voter register, as well as robust logistical arrangements for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) ahead of upcoming off-cycle polls and the 2027 general elections. Stakeholders emphasize that strict adherence to electoral guidelines and transparency will be critical to restoring public trust and safeguarding the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic process.
