FIFA Confirms Nigeria vs South Africa World Cup Qualifier for Bloemfontein

World football governing body, FIFA, has confirmed that South Africa’s crucial 2026 World Cup qualifier against Nigeria will take place at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein on Tuesday, September 9, 2025.

The announcement was made by FIFA’s Head of Qualifiers and International Matches, Gordon Savic, through the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). The match is scheduled to kick off at 5 p.m. Nigerian time.

This high-stakes Matchday 8 fixture in Group C is expected to be decisive in the race for Africa’s sole automatic ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. It comes just three days after Nigeria host Rwanda in Uyo on September 6.

South Africa currently lead the group with 13 points from six games, while Nigeria sit in fourth place with seven points, following a frustrating run of one win, four draws, and one loss. The group also features Benin, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, and Lesotho.

Only the group winner qualifies automatically for the World Cup, while the runner-up may still have a chance through CAF and inter-confederation playoffs. Despite their shaky start, Nigeria remain mathematically in contention with four games left.

Following the September double-header, the Super Eagles will face Lesotho away before concluding their campaign at home against Benin in October.

The reverse fixture in June ended 1–1 in Uyo, with South Africa’s Themba Zwane scoring first before Fisayo Dele-Bashiru equalised for Nigeria early in the second half.

The Super Eagles will be aiming for a crucial win in Bloemfontein to revive their qualification hopes and narrow the six-point gap on South Africa, who are seeking a return to the World Cup for the first time since 2010. Nigeria, three-time African champions, are bidding to qualify for their seventh World Cup, having missed out on the 2022 edition in Qatar.
