MISSION X: Super Falcons Roar Back to Win 10th WAFCON Title in Thrilling 3–2 Victory Over Morocco

Nigeria’s Super Falcons made history yet again, clinching their record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in a dramatic 3–2 comeback win over hosts Morocco in Rabat on Saturday night. After trailing by two goals at halftime, the Falcons launched an inspired second-half response to silence the home crowd and remind the continent of their dominance in women’s football.

Morocco took an early lead in the 12th minute through Captain Ghizlane Chebbak, who curled home a sensational strike from outside the box. Just over ten minutes later, Sanaa Mssoudy capitalized on a defensive lapse to double the advantage, leaving Nigeria with a mountain to climb. But Coach Justin Madugu’s halftime team talk proved decisive, as the Super Falcons returned with renewed energy and focus.

The turnaround began with Esther Okoronkwo, who converted a 64th-minute penalty to reduce the deficit, following a VAR-confirmed foul in the box. Okoronkwo continued her inspired performance by assisting Folashade Ijamilusi for the equaliser in the 71st minute. As the clock ticked down, substitute Jennifer Echegini tapped in the winner in the 88th minute after another well-placed free kick from Okoronkwo sealed one of the most memorable comebacks in WAFCON history.

Post-match, Coach Madugu hailed the team’s mental resilience: “If they didn’t have the mental toughness, they would have given up. We had a game plan, and despite the early setback, they responded with character and fight.”
Esther Okoronkwo, named Woman of the Match, added: “I just wanted to do everything I could to help the team. We came back as a unit, and we deserve this moment.”

The final also saw Nigeria dominate the individual awards. Rasheedat Ajibade was crowned Player of the Tournament, while Chiamaka Nnadozie took home Goalkeeper of the Tournament with four clean sheets. Morocco’s Ghizlane Chebbak secured the Golden Boot with five goals, and Ghana’s national team earned the Fair Play Award.
