UK to Roll Out Free Digital ID to Tackle Illegal Migration and Improve Public Services

UK Prime Minister Keith Starmer on Friday unveiled plans to introduce free digital identification for both citizens and legal residents in a move aimed at curbing illegal migration and improving access to public services.

According to the government, the new digital ID system will simplify applications for services such as driving licences, childcare, welfare and streamline access to tax records. The ID will be stored on users’ phones, and there will be no requirement to carry or produce it physically.

However, the government stressed that the digital ID will be mandatory for proving the right to work. “This will stop those with no right to be here from being able to find work, curbing their prospect of earning money, one of the key pull factors for people who come to the UK illegally” the statement read.

The announcement comes as the Labour government prepares for its annual conference, with Starmer facing mounting pressure over immigration. Speaking on the initiative, the Prime Minister said, “Digital ID is an enormous opportunity for the UK. It will also offer ordinary citizens countless benefits. We are doing the hard graft to deliver a fairer Britain for those who want to see change, not division.”

The UK has historically resisted the introduction of identity cards, but recent polling suggests rising public support for such measures.
