Bimbo Thomas Speaks on Breaking Free From Industry Stereotypes

Nollywood actress Bimbo Thomas revealed she overcame typecasting in the industry by showcasing versatility and leveraging her Theatre Arts training.

Nollywood actress Bimbo Thomas has opened up about her journey to overcoming typecasting in the movie industry and how she worked hard to prove her versatility.

The Omo Ghetto star made the revelation during an appearance on Old Secrets, a podcast hosted by High Chief Obio Oloyejulius, where she discussed the struggles she faced at the start of her career.

Reflecting on her early years in film, Thomas revealed that she intentionally chose not to rush into movie production, preferring instead to establish herself as an actress first.

“When I left school, I told myself I wanted to be established as an actor first before venturing into film production,” she shared.

In those days, she was regularly handed roles that portrayed her as a street fighter or rough character.

“Those years when I was given roles that involved fighting or breaking bottles were good because I can’t actually fight in real life; it’s all make-believe,” she explained.

However, she soon recognized the danger of being pigeonholed into a single character type.

“I told myself that if I continued playing these kinds of roles, they wouldn’t offer me other parts. Because I am a Theatre Arts major and did an apprenticeship as an undergraduate, I knew I had more to offer,” she said.

Thomas stressed that her background as a trained stage actor and vocal performer gave her far greater range than the “tough girl” roles suggested. To avoid being boxed in, she deliberately slowed down on accepting such parts so audiences and producers could see her wider abilities.
