NUJ Demands Forensic Probe into Killing of Arise TV Anchor Somtochukwu Maduagwu

In a statement issued by Comrade Jide Oyekunle, Secretary of the NUJ FCT Council, the union urged the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to unravel the circumstances surrounding her death and ensure that the perpetrators are swiftly arrested and prosecuted.

The NUJ described Maduagwu’s death as a devastating blow, not only to her family and Arise News but also to the Nigerian media industry at large. “Somtochukwu was a brilliant, passionate, and dedicated broadcaster whose professionalism and poise endeared her to colleagues and viewers alike. She represented the very best of a new generation of Nigerian journalists—bold, ethical, and committed to the truth,” Oyekunle said.

The council extended its condolences to her family, friends, and the management and staff of Arise Television, stressing that her tragic passing highlights the worsening security situation in Nigeria and the urgent need for accountability and stronger protections for citizens.

In honour of Maduagwu’s memory, the NUJ urged journalists across the country to reflect on the values she embodied—integrity, excellence, and service to society—while offering prayers and support to her grieving family. “Though her life was brief, her impact was profound. May her legacy continue to inspire courage and truth in journalism,” the statement added.

The NUJ FCT Council further called on media professionals nationwide to remain united, vigilant, and supportive of one another during this period of mourning, stressing that Maduagwu’s death must serve as a wake-up call to address Nigeria’s deepening security concerns.
