African Play-Offs Set for November as Last Chance to Reach World Cup

The road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup enters a decisive phase for Africa. After the group stage of the CAF qualification process concluded, the four best runners-up from the nine groups will compete in a one-off mini-tournament to determine which nation will advance to the inter-confederation play-offs.

The play-offs will take place in Morocco. The semi-finals are scheduled for 13 November 2025, with the final on 16 November 2025. All matches will be single-leg knockouts; if tied at full time, extra time will be used followed by penalties if needed.

The four nations involved are Nigeria national football team (Nigeria), Cameroon national football team, Gabon national football team and Democratic Republic of the Congo national football team (DR Congo).

In the semi-final draw, the highest-seeded team faces the lowest-seeded, and the second-highest faces the third-highest, based on the FIFA World Rankings of 17 October 2025.

The winner of this mini-tournament will then proceed to the inter-confederation play-offs in March 2026, where they will compete for a final spot in the expanded 48-team World Cup.

For Nigeria and its fans, this is a critical moment: the team failed to win their group and therefore must navigate this extra hurdle. Nigeria’s path to North America now depends on success in this high-stakes knockout format.

This play-off represents Africa’s “last ticket” to the World Cup: despite nine direct slots being allocated to CAF group winners, this mini-tournament provides one final path for a continent’s nation to reach the finals via further inter-continental play.
