‘Agbara Nla: The Return’ Sets New Nollywood Box Office Record

Nollywood has recorded another notable achievement as Agbara Nla: The Return, the remake of the popular Nigerian faith-based film, reportedly secured the biggest non-December opening for a Nollywood production.

According to a report published by Premium Times on October 14, 2026, the movie grossed approximately ₦170.6 million from preview screenings and its opening weekend, highlighting the growing commercial appeal of faith-based productions in Nigeria.

The film, which premiered in cinemas on October 1, 2026, revisits the story of the original Agbara Nla, released in 1993 and produced by renowned filmmaker Mike Bamiloye.

The remake was directed by his sons, Damilola Mike-Bamiloye and Joshua Mike-Bamiloye, who brought the well-known story to contemporary audiences with a new cinematic presentation.

The film’s reported box-office performance reflects the continued interest in Nigerian stories rooted in faith, culture and family values. It also demonstrates the potential for classic Nigerian productions to find renewed success through modern adaptations.

The achievement comes at a time when Nollywood continues to explore different genres and storytelling approaches to attract audiences to cinemas and strengthen the industry’s commercial prospects.

As the film continues its theatrical run, attention will remain on its box-office performance and its potential to further establish faith-based cinema as a commercially viable segment of the Nigerian film industry.
