Nigeria at 65: FG Urges Patience as Tinubu’s Reforms Promise Lasting Gains

Nigeria on Sunday marked its 65th Independence Anniversary with a strong appeal from the Federal Government, urging citizens to remain patient and united as the administration of President Bola Tinubu continues to implement sweeping reforms. The government assured that while the changes may be painful at the moment, they are designed to deliver long-term benefits that will reshape the nation’s future.

At an inter-denominational church service held at the National Ecumenical Christian Centre in Abuja, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, emphasized that governance is a shared responsibility. He stressed that the ongoing policies are not aimed at temporary relief but at permanent transformation.

“Under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, our nation is undergoing bold reforms aimed not at short-term comfort but at lasting renewal” Akume said in a statement issued by his media aide, Yomi Odunuga.

Acknowledging the hardship currently faced by Nigerians, Akume noted that the sacrifices being made would pave the way for stronger institutions, improved infrastructure, and better living conditions. “The challenges we face today are deep-rooted, spanning decades. But this administration is determined to confront them head-on and deliver enduring solutions” he said.

He added: “These reforms may feel tough now, but they are laying the foundation for economic recovery, better healthcare, quality education, job creation, and improved energy and food systems. Our challenges are real, but our resilience is greater. This is the time to rekindle our national spirit and transform difficulties into opportunities.”

The SGF also reminded Nigerians that Independence Day is not only about celebrating history but also about renewing the collective drive to build a just and prosperous nation.

In Delta State, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori echoed similar sentiments in his Independence Day message. Speaking during a thanksgiving service at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Asaba, he urged Nigerians to embrace unity, fairness, and justice as the foundation for national progress. He described Nigeria’s survival despite many challenges as proof of divine grace.

“Every citizen has a responsibility to contribute to the Nigeria of our dreams. Independence was born out of a vision of hope, and we must continue to build on the sacrifices of our founding fathers,” Oborevwori said. He further emphasized that peace remains essential for development. “Development starts where peace abounds. Those of us in political leadership must put the people’s interest above personal ambition” he added.

Delivering the homily at the service, the Catholic Bishop of Issele-Uku Diocese, Most Rev. Michael Elue, called on Nigerians to embrace righteousness, endurance, love, and generosity. He stressed that acts of kindness and solidarity with fellow citizens remain the true measure of humanity.
