Nigeria at 65: Calls for Unity, Accountability and Renewed Federalism

As Nigeria marked its 65th Independence anniversary, messages from governors, citizens and civil society reflected a mix of pride, concern and cautious optimism about the nation’s future.

Several governors, speaking through newsmen, urged citizens to embrace unity and sacrifice, stressing that national development requires collective commitment. They praised Nigerians’ resilience and called for continued patience with ongoing reforms. In Edo State, Governor Monday Okpebholo pledged peace, youth empowerment and a “New Edo Has Risen” noting that the state’s renewal would echo broader national aspirations.

On the streets, Nigerians expressed mixed feelings. Voices captured around the country likened the country to “an old man at 65” struggling to find direction, lamenting mounting debts, insecurity and poor governance. Others, however, acknowledged that recent reforms by President Bola Tinubu were difficult but necessary steps toward long-term economic stability. OECS similarly recorded citizens in Ondo, who reflected with both pride and frustration, questioning whether Nigeria’s gains over six decades have met expectations.

At 65, Nigeria’s journey is one of resilience and contradictions — a nation proud of its independence yet still striving to fulfil the promise of inclusive progress and stability.
