2027: Adebayo Warns Against Recycled Politicians, Calls for Fresh Leadership

In a wide-ranging interview with journalists, Adebayo spoke on the future of Nigerian politics, the challenges of opposition coalitions, the internal dynamics of the SDP, and the state of governance under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

On the issue of early campaigns, he faulted President Bola Tinubu and the ruling APC for disregarding the electoral law, noting that their dominance of political messaging has forced opposition parties into campaign mode ahead of schedule. “When you are in government, you set the tone by obeying the law,” he said, stressing that governance, not politicking, should be the priority.

Addressing opposition coalitions, particularly the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Adebayo disclosed that attempts to align with the SDP failed because the group could not provide satisfactory answers to critical ideological questions. He insisted that the problem with Nigerian politics is not merely party acronyms but the absence of sound political philosophy, ethical standards, and people-centered governance.

On speculations of factions within the SDP, Adebayo dismissed the claims, explaining that while the party accommodates different tendencies, its organs function effectively and lawfully. He maintained that the SDP remains a party of “law and order,” with duly elected leaders, including National Chairman Shehu Musa Gabam, steering its affairs.

He also reacted to former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s comments on the APC, agreeing that the ruling party has failed but stressing that the real issue lies in entrenched political tendencies. “Changing parties without changing the mindset only pollutes the new platform,” Adebayo argued.

The SDP chieftain further emphasized the need for Nigerians to embrace new leadership. Comparing old politicians to leopards that cannot change their spots, he said the country cannot afford to remain conservative in the face of poverty, unemployment, and failing institutions. “What Nigeria needs now is a new direction, fresh ideas, and leaders committed to ending poverty and insecurity,” he declared.

On the economy, Adebayo reacted to WTO DG Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala’s commendation of Tinubu, describing it as “correct within the paradigm of neoliberal economics” but detached from the everyday struggles of Nigerians. He likened the administration’s policies to a pilot stabilizing an aircraft mid-storm without yet finding the right altitude or destination.

For him, true progress will only come when governance is separated from money politics, policies are people-focused, and voters use their power to demand accountability.
