FG Declares September 5 Public Holiday for Eid-ul-Mawlid

Muslims in Nigeria and around the world will observe Eid-ul-Mawlid, the birth of Prophet Muhammad, on Friday, September 5, 2025, following the Federal Government’s declaration of the day as a public holiday.

The announcement, issued Wednesday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, was made on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

In its message, government congratulated the Muslim faithful and urged them to emulate the Prophet’s exemplary virtues of peace, love, humility, tolerance and compassion. Nigerians of all faiths were also encouraged to use the occasion to pray for peace, security and stability, while supporting efforts to strengthen unity and foster national development.

“The Minister of Interior wishes Muslims a joyous and peaceful Eid-ul-Mawlid celebration” the statement read, adding that the commemoration provides an opportunity to deepen the bonds of brotherhood, promote peaceful coexistence, and embrace the Prophet’s teachings of mutual respect and selfless service to humanity.

Citizens were further reminded to remain law-abiding and security conscious, while backing policies aimed at promoting national unity and sustainable growth.

Eid-ul-Mawlid, observed during Rabi’ al-Awwal, the third month of the Islamic calendar, is celebrated with prayers, lectures, processions, and charitable acts. In Nigeria, the day is officially recognised as a national public holiday, reflecting both the country’s large Muslim population and its longstanding tradition of honouring major Islamic festivals.
