Peter Obi Denies Alliance with Jonathan Ahead of 2027 Elections

Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has dismissed claims of a political alliance with former President Goodluck Jonathan ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting that there is no pact between them to challenge President Bola Tinubu.

The clarification came from Obi’s media aide and National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, during an interview with newsmen.

Tanko’s statement followed growing political speculation after a recent closed-door meeting between Obi and Jonathan in Abuja, which triggered rumours of an opposition realignment ahead of 2027.

He explained that the meeting was a cordial interaction between two respected leaders and should not be interpreted as a political move. “My principal and the former president have a very good working relationship and they know each other very well. So, seeing them talk to each other does not mean anything. It should not be translated to mean more than a friendly discussion on how to move the country forward” Tanko said.

He added that there was no discussion or agreement concerning the next presidential election, noting, “Even when they met in Ghana, I was there. There was nothing like that.”

The comment comes amid rising anxiety within the opposition as talks of a coalition to challenge Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) gain traction. On social media, supporters of both leaders have been debating the possibility of cooperation, with many calling for unity among opposition figures.

Although neither side disclosed details of their discussions, the parley took place amid growing criticism of Tinubu’s economic policies and mounting public dissatisfaction with governance.

Jonathan, who led Nigeria between 2010 and 2015, has in recent years assumed the role of a regional statesman, mediating political disputes and promoting democratic values across Africa.

Obi, on the other hand, has continued his nationwide consultations, which analysts view as part of his early groundwork for a possible 2027 presidential bid. His strong performance in the 2023 election significantly altered Nigeria’s traditional two-party landscape, cementing his place as a key opposition figure.
