Liverpool Begin Title Defence with Emotional 4–2 Victory Over Bournemouth

Anfield was a stage of both emotion and drama on Friday night as Liverpool opened their Premier League title defence with a thrilling 4–2 win against AFC Bournemouth.

The evening began with a heartfelt tribute to forward Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who tragically passed away in July. The pre-match ceremony featured mosaics, a minute’s silence and stirring renditions of You’ll Never Walk Alone. The atmosphere left many players, including Mohamed Salah, visibly moved. Manager Arne Slot later described the tribute as “impressive and powerful.”

Liverpool started brightly with debutant Hugo Ekitike opening the scoring before Cody Gakpo doubled the lead early in the second half. Bournemouth fought back through Antoine Semenyo, who struck twice to level the game. Despite defensive lapses, Slot praised his team’s resilience and fitness.

“We started the second half really well, but we were playing against a team that never gives up. They faced a very fit Liverpool side” Slot told reporters.

The encounter was briefly overshadowed when Semenyo reported racist abuse from the crowd. The incident, now under investigation, was condemned by both clubs and by Slot, who labelled such behaviour unacceptable at Anfield or anywhere else.

Slot hailed the atmosphere during the finale as “unbelievable,” adding: “Wow, wow, wow.”

Salah’s goal not only secured the three points but also drew him level with Andy Cole in the Premier League’s all-time scoring chart, marking a fitting end to an opening night filled with emotion and intensity.
