Biden Undergoes Skin Cancer Surgery Amid Ongoing Health Challenges

Former U.S. President Joe Biden has once again undergone treatment for cancer, this time through a surgical procedure to remove skin cancer after recent public appearances showed him with a bandage and visible mark on his forehead.

According to a statement reported by Fox News on Thursday, Biden’s spokesperson confirmed that he underwent Mohs surgery—a highly precise method that removes cancerous skin layers one at a time while preserving healthy tissue. Although the exact type of skin cancer has not been disclosed, the technique is often used for early-stage detection and treatment.

The development drew public attention after footage captured Biden leaving a Delaware church over the Labor Day weekend with a noticeable scar. Spokesperson Kelly Scully stressed that the aim of the procedure was to eliminate all cancer cells while minimising skin damage.

This is not Biden’s first encounter with skin cancer. In early 2023, while still in office, he had a basal cell carcinoma removed from his chest. His physician at the time, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, confirmed the tissue was completely excised, requiring no further treatment.

Cancer has deeply affected the Biden family. His late son, Beau Biden, died from a brain tumour, while his wife, Jill Biden, underwent surgery in 2023 to remove two cancerous skin lesions. These experiences, Biden has said, highlight the urgent need for awareness, early detection, and timely treatment.

Health experts emphasise that cancers such as skin and prostate cancer are often treatable if caught early. The American Cancer Society recommends routine screenings, particularly prostate-specific antigen testing from age 50 for men of average risk, and from age 45 for those at higher risk, including Black men or individuals with a family history.

At 82, Biden remains the oldest living former U.S. president. Despite health challenges, he continues to appear in public and advocate for regular check-ups, lifestyle vigilance, and community support as critical tools in reducing the burden of cancer.
