Ondo Declares Health Insurance Mandatory for All Residents, Disburses N38m to Support Medical Bills

The Ondo State Government has made the State Contributory Health Scheme mandatory for every resident as part of its strategy to make healthcare more affordable and accessible. The declaration was made by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Banji Ajaka, who represented Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa at the presentation of cheques totaling N38 million to 39 residents to support their medical expenses over the weekend.

Ajaka explained that the compulsory health insurance scheme was introduced to ensure that all residents, including public servants, local government workers, and private citizens, can access quality healthcare without financial distress.

“The contributory health insurance scheme in Ondo State is compulsory for everyone. We started with state and local government workers who are already benefiting from it. You do not need cash in hand to receive care. For instance, in the case of surgeries, patients contribute 40 percent while the government covers 60 percent. I encourage all residents to enroll,” he said.

The commissioner also highlighted the Abiyamo Scheme for Maternal and Child Health, which provides free healthcare services to registered mothers and children. “Whether for spontaneous vaginal delivery or caesarean section, beneficiaries pay nothing if they are registered,” Ajaka added.

Explaining the cheque presentation, Ajaka stated that the gesture was part of the governor’s approval to assist indigent residents battling serious health conditions, including kidney diseases requiring transplants. “We are distributing N38 million to 39 residents after careful review of 54 applications by a selection board. This support will help ease the financial burden of their treatments,” he said.

He urged beneficiaries to use the funds strictly for their medical needs and advised the public to prioritize their health. “Health is wealth. Take care of your body; it is your most valuable asset,” he emphasized.

One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Caroline Jimoh, expressed appreciation to the government, describing the intervention as timely. “Many of us had lost hope due to the high cost of treatment. This initiative has restored our confidence and given us a chance to recover,” she said.

The initiative reflects the state government’s broader commitment to universal health coverage and sustainable healthcare delivery for all Ondo residents.
