Dangote Refinery Expands Capacity to 1.4 Million Barrels Per Day

The Dangote Group has revealed plans to expand the capacity of its refinery from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day, a move that will make it the largest refinery in the world.

The Group President, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, made this known during a press briefing in Lagos on Sunday. Seated beside his longtime friend, Mr Femi Otedola, Chairman of First Bank, Dangote confirmed that construction work for the expansion would commence immediately.

“We are expanding the Dangote Petroleum Refinery from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day,” Dangote said. “When completed, it will surpass the Jamnagar Refinery in India to become the largest refinery globally.”

He explained that the project would create employment for about 65,000 workers, with 85 per cent of the workforce being Nigerians. The refinery’s power generation capacity is also set to increase from 500 megawatts to 1,000 megawatts to support the expansion.

Dangote further disclosed that the facility would upgrade its production to Euro 6 fuel standards, moving beyond the current Euro 5 specification to meet the latest global environmental requirements.

In addition, the industrialist announced that the refinery would be listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange in 2026, allowing Nigerians to become shareholders in the historic project.

Expressing appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continued support, Dangote assured that the expansion project would be completed within three years.
