Catching Silent Killers Early: Push to Bring Kidney Care to Nigeria’s Grassroots

Catching Silent Killers Early: Push to Bring Kidney Care to Nigeria’s Grassroots
  • Addressing an Economic & Health Burden: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) currently affects up to one-fifth of the Nigerian population, disproportionately striking adults in their most productive working years. Because only 1 out of every 40 affected individuals shows visible symptoms in early stages, it acts as a “silent killer” that drains both household and national resources.
  • Mandatory Early Screening: Prof. Arogundade recommends incorporating routine kidney health screenings into the school admissions process—spanning nursery, primary, secondary, and tertiary levels—to detect pediatric and early-onset kidney conditions early.
  • Decentralization to Grassroots (PHC): By embedding basic diagnostics (such as urine tests, blood pressure checks, and blood sugar tracking) directly into local PHC centers, rural and underserved communities can catch renal issues before they progress to end-stage kidney failure.
  • Targeting Root Causes & Environmental Factors: The proposal calls for stronger public health awareness campaigns targeting underlying risk factors:
    • Medical risks: Uncontrolled hypertension, diabetes, and untreated chronic infections (including HIV).Lifestyle and toxic exposures: Abuse of over-the-counter pain medications (analgesics), use of skin-bleaching creams containing heavy metals, unguided herbal concoctions, smoking, and environmental toxins.
    • A National Policy for Universal Access: Prof. Arogundade urged the Federal Government to establish a comprehensive National Kidney Care Policy to standardize care and broaden health insurance coverage, ensuring access to life-saving interventions like dialysis and kidney transplants for all Nigerians regardless of socio-economic status.
