Nigerian, South African Lawmakers Clash Over Xenophobia Debate in Malawi

Nigerian 🇳🇬 and South African 🇿🇦 lawmakers disagreed at a parliamentary conference in Malawi 🇲🇼 over how violence against foreign nationals should be described.

Nigerian lawmakers called for the attacks to be recognised as xenophobia, while their South African counterparts argued that the discussion should also address illegal immigration and the enforcement of immigration laws.

The disagreement occurred during a conference attended by more than 300 lawmakers and officials, which focused on democracy, human rights and regional cooperation.

The debate highlights the differing perspectives between the two countries on how to address violence against foreign nationals and the broader challenges surrounding migration in the region.
