NiMet Forecasts Thunderstorms and Moderate Rains Across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted thunderstorms and rainfall across the country from Monday to Wednesday.

In its weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet said isolated thunderstorms with moderate rains would affect parts of Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Kebbi, Adamawa and Taraba on Monday morning. Later in the day, most of the northern region will experience thunderstorms with moderate rains, while flash floods are possible in Adamawa, Taraba and Gombe.

For the central region, cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine are expected in the morning, followed by moderate rainfall in Niger, Kogi, Kwara, the FCT and Benue. Thunderstorms with moderate rains are forecast for later in the day.

The southern region is expected to experience cloudy conditions on Monday morning with moderate rains over Ekiti, Ondo, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River. Most parts of the region will also see moderate rains later in the day.

On Tuesday, cloudy skies with sunshine intervals are expected in the northern region in the morning, with isolated thunderstorms and moderate rains likely in Borno, Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba and Adamawa. Later in the day, thunderstorms are forecast across Kano, Jigawa, Yobe, Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi and Taraba.

In the central states, cloudy skies with sunshine intervals and moderate rains are expected over Kogi, Niger, the FCT, Kwara and Nasarawa in the morning, while thunderstorms with moderate rains are likely later in Niger, Kogi, Kwara, Benue and the FCT.

Southern states including Oyo, Ekiti, Ondo, Enugu, Anambra, Ebonyi and Delta will see cloudy skies with chances of moderate rains in the morning, while light to moderate rains are expected later across most of the region.

On Wednesday, Sokoto and Zamfara may experience light rain in the morning under cloudy skies with sunshine intervals. By afternoon, isolated thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected over Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Kaduna, Zamfara, Kebbi and Sokoto.

The central region will also see cloudy skies in the morning with light rains in the FCT, Kogi, Kwara and Niger, followed by thunderstorms later in Benue, Kwara, Kogi and Niger. Cloudy skies are forecast across the southern region in the morning with moderate rains likely later in the day.

NiMet advised motorists to avoid driving in heavy downpours, farmers to delay fertiliser and pesticide application before rainfall, and residents to secure loose objects, disconnect electrical appliances and avoid tall trees during storms. Airline operators were also urged to obtain airport-specific weather reports for effective planning.
