Oba Rashidi Ladoja Set for Peaceful Coronation as 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland

The Balogun of Ibadan-designate, Oba Tajudeen Ajibola, has assured that the coronation of the Olubadan-designate, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, will be held without rancour, unlike the controversies that surrounded the enthronement of his predecessor.

Speaking on Monday at the Olubadan Palace in Oke-Aremo during interdenominational prayers marking the beginning of the coronation activities, Oba Ajibola stressed that Ladoja’s emergence as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland was a settled matter.

The ceremony was attended by the Otun Balogun, Oba Kolawole Adegbola; Ashipa Balogun, Oba Dauda Azeez; Ekaarun Olubadan, Oba Adebayo Akande and several dignitaries.

Coronation Ceremony

Oba Ladoja will officially receive the staff and instrument of office on Friday, September 26, at Mapo Hall in Ibadan, with President Bola Tinubu expected to lead dignitaries from across the country. His crowning follows the transition of the 43rd Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who passed away on July 7, 2025, at the age of 90.

Why Ladoja’s Emergence is Different

Reflecting on past events, Oba Ajibola explained that during the emergence of the late Oba Olakulehin, concerns had been raised over his health, leading to differences among the kingmakers. He noted that the current succession process was free of disputes as Oba Ladoja maintained open communication with the chiefs and fulfilled all traditional requirements, including the acceptance of the crown.

“There is no problem at all this time. No dispute. The throne has been created by God and destined for him,” Oba Ajibola said, adding that Ibadan would continue to celebrate peace and unity.

The Uniqueness of the Olubadan Stool

Oba Ajibola highlighted the distinct succession system in Ibadan, where ascension alternates strictly between the Otun line and the Balogun line. “Ibadan is like a country on its own, yet we have no dispute over succession. It is clear and predictable” he noted.

He further praised Ladoja’s political experience as a former senator and governor, describing it as an asset that would strengthen his traditional leadership.

Prayers for Peace and Development

At the interdenominational prayers, the President General of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), Ajeniyi Ajewole, expressed confidence that Ladoja’s reign would bring unprecedented peace and development.

Former Prelate of the Methodist Church Nigeria, Sunday Makinde, urged the monarch to promote religious harmony, while the Chief Imam of Ibadanland, Abdulganiyu Agbotomokekere, prayed for lasting peace and progress during his reign.

The event featured traditional renditions, Christian psalm readings, and Quran recitations, symbolising unity among faiths. Dignitaries present included the Aare Musulumi of Yorubaland, Daud Makanjuola; the Chief Imam of Ogbomosoland, Taliat Ayilara; and the Oyo State CAN Chairman, Joshua Akinyemiju among others.
