INEC: Lagos Voter Registration Figures Reflect Demographics, Not Manipulation

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Lagos State has dismissed claims by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) alleging manipulation of figures in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, describing the accusations as baseless and misleading.

The ADC had recently alleged possible irregularities in the online pre-registration process for the CVR in Lagos and some other states.

Responding to the allegation on Monday in Lagos, Mr. Taiwo Gbadegesin, Head of Voter Education and Publicity for INEC in the state, said the claims were unfounded and a product of mere speculation.

“The registration figures in Lagos are consistent with past CVR trends and mirror the state’s demographic realities: a youthful, tech-savvy population,” he stated.

Gbadegesin noted that during the last CVR exercise (2021–2022), Lagos recorded the highest number of registrations nationwide. The state’s voter register rose from 6,570,291 before the exercise to 7,060,195 afterwards. He explained that the current figures are in line with this established pattern.

He further emphasized that the numbers reflect not only the demographic composition of Lagos but also INEC’s effective deployment strategy and the state office’s extensive, sustained public awareness campaigns.

Gbadegesin stressed that INEC remains committed to transparency and accountability in fulfilling its constitutional mandate.
