Osimhen Redeems Himself as Super Eagles Beat Gabon 4–1 to Reach Playoff Final

Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen showcased remarkable mental strength on Thursday as Nigeria battled past Gabon with a 4–1 extra-time victory to book a place in Sunday’s playoff final against DR Congo.

Nigeria controlled large spells of the match but were forced into extra time after Osimhen missed a golden chance that could have wrapped up the win in regulation time. The Galatasaray striker, however, refused to let the moment define him.

Speaking after the match, Osimhen admitted the miss was disappointing but insisted it never shook his confidence.

“I am a striker. Sometimes I score the goals no one expects and sometimes I miss the ones everyone thinks I will score,” he said.

He explained that his mentality is built on moving forward regardless of missed opportunities.

“So long as the game is still on, I try to correct it. I told my teammates I was sorry and that I would make up for it in extra time. I am happy I did.”

Osimhen delivered on that promise, scoring twice in extra time to help seal Nigeria’s emphatic win. Sevilla’s Akor Adams and Chidera Ejuke added a goal each, rounding off a dominant display from the Super Eagles.

With Gabon out of the way, Nigeria now prepares for a decisive clash against DR Congo on Sunday as the team continues its push toward the 2026 World Cup.
