Tension Persists After Wike–Naval Officer Confrontation as Defence Leaders Warn Against Disrespect for Uniformed Forces

The controversy surrounding the confrontation between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike and a naval officer in Abuja continues to dominate public discourse as top defence figures caution that disrespect directed at the armed forces strikes at the heart of Nigeria’s sovereignty.

Former Chief of Defence Staff General Lucky Irabor (retd) and Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle warned that any act interpreted as contempt for military uniforms challenges the authority of the nation itself. Both men described the encounter as unnecessary and avoidable while dismissing any justification for punishing Lieutenant A. Yerima who was involved in the altercation.

Wike however dismissed online claims that he harboured personal grievances against the military. He insisted that the Federal Capital Territory Administration will not bow to intimidation and will continue to enforce lawful land use regulations.

Speaking at the national dialogue on media terrorism and national security during the 21st All Nigeria Editors’ Conference in Abuja Irabor noted that military uniforms symbolise national dignity. He stressed that the uniform represents the authority of the state rather than the rank or age of the officer wearing it. He added that negative reactions to uniformed personnel amount to insulting the nation.

Irabor described public commentary on the clash as misguided and said many observers missed the core issue. He explained that the armed forces operate under strict disciplinary systems that leave no room for public humiliation of subordinates even by senior officers. He said every alleged offence must be judged through actus reus meaning the action itself and mens rea meaning the intent.

He added that although the FCT minister has authority over land matters the real issue concerns the respect owed to state authority represented by military and security personnel. Irabor urged the public to follow lawful channels when uniformed officers act outside their mandate.

Matawalle also ruled out any grounds for disciplining the naval officer. Speaking in an interview he said the situation should have been handled through formal communication rather than a public exchange. He said the officer acted professionally obeyed orders and maintained discipline. He added that undermining military officers indirectly challenges the Commander in Chief.

He stated that the officer did not violate any military regulation since he followed lawful instructions and conducted himself respectfully. According to him a soldier who obeys orders should not be subjected to public confrontation especially by a high-ranking official. He warned that disrespect toward uniformed forces weakens the state.

Wike who spoke with journalists insisted that his actions were governed by law and not sentiment. He stressed that security aides must operate within legal boundaries and that the FCT Administration will not allow intimidation to weaken its enforcement duties. He added that he respects the military and that claims suggesting otherwise are attempts to create unnecessary conflict.

He said Abuja must remain governed by its master plan and that no individual regardless of status should violate land regulations. According to him failure to uphold standards encourages impunity and weakens order.

The Pan Niger Delta Forum took a different position and argued that Wike deserves a national apology for being obstructed while performing his duties. PANDEF’s National Chairman Ambassador Godknows Igali urged President Bola Tinubu to order a full investigation. He said the officer’s conduct demeaned the office of the President whose authority is delegated to the FCT Minister.

Meanwhile former Vice President Atiku Abubakar denied social media claims alleging he gifted a Toyota SUV to Lieutenant Yerima after the confrontation. His media adviser Paul Ibe described the story as entirely fabricated and urged the public to disregard it.
