NIPOST Moves to Cushion Impact of U.S. Executive Order on Postal Shipments

The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has assured customers across the country that it is taking steps to mitigate possible delays in the shipment of goods to the United States, following the recent Executive Order signed by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Effective Thursday, August 29, 2025, all postal items bound for the U.S.—excluding letters and documents—will now attract a prepaid customs duty of $80 (or its Naira equivalent) at the point of acceptance in Nigeria.

In a statement issued in Abuja, NIPOST explained that the directive stems from the U.S. Executive Order on “Suspending Duty-Free De Minimis Treatment for All Countries” under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). The order suspends the de minimis exemption on postal shipments worldwide, meaning that the new charges and checks apply not only to Nigeria but to every country sending goods into the United States.

The agency noted that global logistics operations are already feeling the ripple effects, as airlines and cargo carriers implement stricter handling procedures for U.S.-bound shipments. This, it warned, could lead to extended transit and processing times, resulting in possible delivery delays.

To address these challenges, NIPOST said it is actively engaging with the Universal Postal Union (UPU), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and its airline partners to minimize service disruptions and safeguard customer experience.
