NiMet Forecasts Thunderstorms, Heavy Rains, and Flash Floods Across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast widespread rainy and thundery weather from Monday to Wednesday across different regions of the country. The agency issued the outlook on Sunday in Abuja, warning of possible flash floods in vulnerable states.

Northern Region

On Monday morning, isolated thunderstorms with light rains are expected in parts of Adamawa and Taraba. Later in the day, storms will spread to Kaduna, Gombe, Kebbi, Zamfara, Bauchi, Southern Borno and Taraba.
Similar conditions are expected Tuesday and Wednesday, with rainfall predicted over Kaduna, Kano, Gombe, Katsina, Sokoto, Kebbi, Bauchi, Adamawa, Zamfara and Taraba.

Central Region

A cloudy atmosphere with intervals of sunshine is expected, with light rains likely over Nasarawa, the FCT, Niger, Plateau, Kogi and Benue in the mornings.
By afternoon and evening, thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are predicted across most parts of the region on all three days.

Southern Region

NiMet predicted cloudy skies and sunshine intervals with isolated thunderstorms over Ebonyi, Abia, Imo, Lagos, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River and Akwa Ibom on Monday morning.
By evening, moderate rains and thunderstorms are expected across most southern states, with a warning of flash floods in Bayelsa, Ebonyi, Rivers and Akwa Ibom.
Similar conditions will persist on Tuesday and Wednesday over Ogun, Ondo, Oyo, Anambra and Enugu, in addition to the previously listed states.

Safety Advisory

NiMet urged residents to:

  • Activate emergency response plans in flood-prone states.
  • Drive with caution during heavy rains.
  • Avoid applying fertilizer or pesticides immediately before rainfall to prevent nutrient loss.
  • Disconnect electrical appliances during thunderstorms.
  • Stay away from tall trees and secure loose objects to prevent accidents.

NiMet encouraged the public to remain updated through official weather bulletins on its website and media channels.
